To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering, one must not love. But then, one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer; not to love is to suffer; to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy, then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be happy, one must love or love to suffer or suffer from too much happiness.

– Woody Allen

Sarah Greenberg, the designer behind Sarah Swell Jewelry, creates hand-hewn treasures in precious metals that exemplify casual luxury. All of her pieces are meticulously crafted using ancient techniques.  She attended the School Of The Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston, where on a whim, she enrolled in a silversmithing class. It was love at first flame. After learning the trade from a local jeweler, Sarah decided to pursue a career in the industry. She relocated to San Francisco, earning her degree from the prestigious Revere Academy Of Jewelry Arts. Sarah was then chosen to work with one of the top award winning contemporary jewelry designers in the country.

Red Cliff

October 26, 2009

Finally, the most expensive movie made in Chinese history is being released in the U.S.  Estimated around $80 million (not bad compared to $200 million for Titanic).   Directed by John Woo, Red Cliff is a historical drama based on the legendary 208 A.D. battle that heralded the end of the Han Dynasty.  The original version is in two 2.5 hour parts.  The U.S. version has been edited down to one 2.5 hour movie.  Starring Tong Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chang Chen and Zhao Wei.  It has gotten great reviews!  Opens in theaters November 20th!

RED CLIFF opens as power hungry Prime Minister-turned-General Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) seeks permission from the Han dynasty Emperor to organize a southward-bound mission designed to crush the two troublesome warlords who stand in his way, Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen). As the expedition gets underway, Cao Cao’s troops rain destruction on Liu Bei’s army, forcing him into retreat. Liu Bei’s military strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) knows that the rebels’ only hope for survival is to form an alliance with rival warlord Sun Quan, and reaches out to Sun Quan’s trusted advisor, war hero Zhou Yu (Tony Leung). Vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao’s brutal, fast-approaching army, the warlords band together to mount a heroic campaign unrivaled in history that changes the face of China forever. A massive hit in Asia and the most expensive Asian film production of all time, RED CLIFF is a breathtaking war epic that marks the triumphant return of John Woo.  Check out the website.

In Touch With Your Emotions

October 25, 2009

From  The Human Brain Book by Rita Carter.

There are a number of structural and functional differences between male and female brains.

The human brain is divided into two hemispheres that do different things. They are connected by the corpus callosum, a thick band of nerve tissue that carries information between the two.

This band of nerves is slightly larger, on average, in women than in men  –  which means the emotional right side of the brain is better connected to the analytical left side.

This may be why women are more emotionally aware. It may also allow emotion to be incorporated more readily into thought and speech.

When doing complex tasks, women use both sides of their brain, while men use the side more obviously suited to the task.

To test your corpus callosum, try the following: Close your eyes and spread out your hands, palms facing upwards. Get someone to touch one of your fingertips (say, on the right hand) and with your opposite hand try to touch the corresponding finger with the thumb of the same hand.

If information is flowing properly between the hemispheres, you should be able to do this without opening your eyes.
